This is where the Big Bucks Hide, Mule Deer and elk. There is alot of open land here, and a lot of private land so be careful. This is a true story, one year I spoke to the bug station person, and for all you who dont knopw what that is, it is the inpection station, when you enter into California who check you for fruit etc. that might not be alowed in California.
The story is that a hunter, or want to be hunter shot someones "Mule" and tried to get it validated at the inspection station. This is where the "Mule Deer" live. Notice the word deer not Mule, what a jackass. Shows you how much some hunters dont know what the heck they are shooting at. It could even be you! I have to tell you, it is scary out there. I think the only thrill of hunting anymore is the thrill of being shot at. That way you have an excuse to shoot back. No, seriously I think there are actually some nuts out there with guns, that will shoot you. The license is their excuse to carry a gun, and shooting at you is their fun. If they hit you, it is an accident. The gun went off while they were holding it.
Other animals in the area are herds of antelope. There are a lot of various animals in this area, that you will never see anywhere else. During the winter months you will see them on the white covered snow ground. This is by far one of the most wanted hunting areas. Big Mule deer and animals of every kind, everywhere.
FISHING
As for fishing, well a little lake near Fort Bidwell has cut throat trout in it. The water is so murky, you cant even see the bottom. Take your weight off, throw in your bait as far as you can and wait. Dang! nice size fish about 17 inches, with pirana teeth.
Now up by New Pine Creek, take to the hills near the border up to the Lakes there.
They finally plow the road out the 4th of July of snow so you can get there. There are three lakes to the west of New Pine Creek. New pine creek is in California, but the post office is in Oregon. Half the town is in each state. Great fishing in those lakes but they are smaller pan size fish. Nice camping spots there for hunters and fishermen alike. Now for Goose Lake, it has a long history. they say it reached from Alturas to Lakeview Oregon at some time and had a ferry boat of such that they ran.
A friend of mine and Myself headed across the lake with information I had about the contour of the lake bottom and how deep it was. It showed about 12 feet deep at most in the center. We took a fish finder and headed across the lake to find out.
Sure enough we spotted no fish although there were reports of fish in the lake near a creek outlet, but we never saw any on the fish finder. The depth of the Lake was indeed about 12 feet deep at most I would say 24 feet but that would be streaching it.
What we found was what the map said at about 12 feet deep. Well we had to try and find out, as that could have been our secret fishing spot since nobody fishes it. Now we all know why, but whos to know, there might be some near creek outlets.
